There is vast selection if toothpastes to choose from, which can make for a tricky decision.
So, which toothpaste is the best? And which one do we choose?
The most important thing to look for in a tooth paste is if it contains fluoride.
Fluoride is an essential as it helps to prevent tooth decay by protecting our teeth from acid erosion from the food and drinks we consume during the day. If you would like to learn more about the effects of fluoride and its importance, check out our blog post titled ‘How does fluoride protect your teeth?’ from 23 September 2022.
There are also ingredients, other than fluoride, that have proven to be beneficial in our toothpaste; these include:
-Arginine (neutralizes plaque acids)
-SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulphate, a foaming agent which helps to dissolve dirt and grease)
-Silica (Abrasive, so can help to remove surface stains)
-Triclosan (an antibacterial)
Some tooth pastes are also made to target specific needs:
These include sensitivity, whitening and enamel erosion protection.
Sensitivity tooth pastes like Sensodyne and Colgate Pro-Relief are great at aiding in calming down the effects of sensitivity.
As for whitening toothpastes, there is very limited evidence to prove that it works and charcoal toothpastes that claim to help whiten can actual cause more damage to your teeth than its worth as they are quite abrasive and can sand away the layers of your teeth and often do not contain fluoride to help protect them.
Toothpastes that claim to strengthen and/or restore erosion on teeth also have very limited evidence to prove this. So beware of toothpastes marketed this way. Sometimes it’s best to just stick to the basics and what we already know is tried and true-and not get lost in these new fads!
