How can pregnancy effect your oral health?

During pregnancy you are at higher risk of issues, not just with the teeth but with the gums as well. This is due to the changes in a women’s hormones during this time, altering how the body reacts to bacteria and changes the blood flow in the gums.

It is important during pregnancy to be on high alert for conditions such as:

  1. Gum Disease
  2. Tooth Decay
  3. Tooth Erosion

Gum Disease

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that may cause bleeding, swell and become sensitive. If untreated in major cases it can cause tooth loss due to the damage to bone. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of gum disease due to the rapid change in hormones.  This condition during pregnancy can also impact the baby as gum disease can be linked to premature birth.

Tooth Decay

Cravings are a large part of pregnancy, especially sweet treats and not so healthy snacks. Giving into these cravings can increase your chance of tooth decay. It is well known that dental bacteria feeds off sugar and releases acid that breaks down the enamel layer of the teeth.  These now cavities may require fillings, root canal or extraction.

The more sugar and you consume during your pregnancy the higher the risk of tooth decay, although regular brushing and flossing can help prevent plaque from forming and help to protect the teeth. It is important to reduce your sugar intake as much as possible during this time, as difficult it may be.

Tooth Erosion

Morning sickness is a common factor of pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. This may cause erosion due to the acidity and it’s important to remember to avoid brushing your teeth immediately after vomiting as this may brush away the enamel layer of the teeth. Instead try rinsing your mouth out with water or gargling with a mouthwash, as this will remove the taste and the acidity without removing the enamel layer.
