Mouth guards are devices used to protect your teeth from grinding or clenching while you sleep or from injuries while you play sports. They can also help to reduce snoring and relieve obstructive sleep apnea. Mouth guards can reduce the risk of dental injuries. Sport, leisure and recreation activities are the most common cause of dental injuries.
Custom made mouth guards at Coomera Dental Centre-
We will take a mold of your teeth and use it to create a mouth guard specifically for the structure of your teeth and mouth. This provides a much better fit which makes them more comfortable and harder to accidentally dislodge.
Wearing an appropriately designed and made mouth guard while participating in sport will protect against dental injuries. Players of all ages involved in sports and activities where they are at risk of an injury to the face should protect their teeth with a properly fitted mouth guard.
A protective mouth guard should
- be comfortable yet tight-fitting
- allow normal breathing and swallowing
- allow normal speech
- not cause gagging
- be odorless and tasteless
- be thick enough to provide protection against impact
Caring for your Mouth guard
We suggest taking these actions in order to care properly for your mouth guard
- Rinse the mouth guard in soap and warm (not hot) water after each use. Allow it to air-dry.
- Disinfect the mouth guard from time to time with a mouthwash.
- Keep the mouth guard in the plastic, ventilated box we give you with your mouth guard.
- Do not leave the mouth guard in direct sunlight, in a closed car or in the car’s glove box. Heat can damage it.
- Make sure your mouth guard is in good condition before each use.
- Ask us to inspect your mouth guard at every dental check-up.
- Replace the mouth guard if it is damaged.
- Replace a child’s mouth guard every 12 to 18 months, even if it appears to be in good condition. Growth and new teeth can alter the fit.
- Replace an adult’s mouth guard after dental treatment or tooth loss.
